mmmm . . . cocoa banana loaf

Popped over to my next door neighbor's home for lunch today.  She's home working before the birth of her twins (her first kids) next week.  She made lunch, ( a very yummy frittatta) while I baked dessert.

Cocoa Banana Loaf (studded with chocolate chips).  Rich, moist and chocolately, the cake is a little dense, but not in a bad way.  The banana actually makes one think there is some sort of liquor in the cake, but there isn't a drop.  The recipe is from the book "Baking With Flavor" by Lisa Yockelson.  I love that book.  There hasn't been a recipe yet I've tried from it that people don't love.

inspiration - sand and water

Recently I learned a friend's daughter has taken up playing the guitar ( and violin!) so I've been acting as musical Yoda for the young girl and sifting through many of my favorite acoustic guitar clips I can find on you tube.

Here's one -  Beth Nielsen Chapman - "Sand and Water"

art journal - the continuing story

I did it.

I finally got it started.  Decorated the covers, and did a couple of pages, but will only post one.

this moment

{this moment}

A Friday ritual.
A single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week.
A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember.

mother's day crafts and inspiration

Well, my first ever mother's day has come and gone.  It was lovely, though it was filled with traveling to both sides of the family.  Hopefully when the little one gets older, I can spend Mother's Day at home . . in bed.

My Mother's Day gift from my hubby was a pretty little necklace from a website I found in my blog-o-sphere rambles on the interwebs. Beautiful stuff that any mom would love. Mine was a small silver heart stamped with my baby's nickname on it and a pearl suspended on a delicate silver chain.

The Vintage Pearl - http://www.thevintagepearl.com/

And I decided to use this opportunity to get some craftsy stuff done.  So the baby gave a gift to her grandmothers and great grandmothers - pictures in decorated frames.

They were a hit.  And fun to make.  Just some unfinished wood frames from my local craft store, some white acrylic paint, foam stickers, vellum, some rubber stamps and that ever loved embossing gun again!

Though, note to self: when crafting in the wee hours of the morning, make sure one does things right side up!

And just a song from one of my favorite musicians: Ani DiFranco.  I've always admired her guitar playing skills -  and have attempted to tackle learning a few of her songs.  Not an easy task if you've ever seen her play live.

Ani wrote this one about her daughter not long after she was born.  I just think it's lovely.

"present/infant" by Ani DiFranco

lately i've been glaring into mirrors
picking myself apart
you'd think at my age i'd of thought
of something better to do
than making insecurity into a full-time job
making insecurity into an art
i fear my life will be over
and i will have never lived it unfettered
always glaring into mirrors
mad i don't look better
but now here's this tiny baby
and they say she looks just like me
and she is smiling at me
with that present/infant glee
and i would defend
to the ends of the earth
her perfect right to be
so i'm beginning to see some problems
with the ongoing work of my mind
and i've got myself a new mantra
it says: "don't forget to have a good time"
don't let the sellers of stuff
power enough
to rob you of your grace
love is all over the place
there's nothing wrong with your face
love is all over the place

art journal - take one

Well, I started.  At least I picked out an old empty journal to use.  I painted the cover with white acryllic paint to cover the logo printed on it.

And now I'm stuck.

What now?  I can't help but admit, I'm intimidated to start this project.

Do you have an art journal?  How did you start it?

early morning thoughts

Creative goals for this year:

1.) Get back to playing acoustic guitar.  Check in with guitar teacher, Rick DelSavio.
(I had stopped due to getting carpal tunnel during pregnancy.  Now must find a time to work those calluses up again.)

2.) Knit more/ possibly start a crochet project.
(Again, stopped mid pregnancy because my wrists hurt.)

3.) Start an art journal.

4.) Continue dabbling with watercolors

5.) Try doing a mixed media art piece, possibly collage.

6.) Learn to really use my sewing machine.  Possibly finish a simple sewing project.

7.) Work more with new digital camera.

8.) Sing. Sing. Sing.  Check in with my voice teacher, Susan Baum.

9.) Do more creative writing.  Talk with Sacha about re-writing early piece into something she can film.

10.) Do not be afraid of sharing my artwork.

I dropped by my local arts and crafts store a few days ago.  I do love that place.  I think for the same reason I love office supply stores.  I see the potential of what could be with all of those empty notebooks, unused pencils, paints, beads . .etc.  All the projects that could be created.  It excites me to be honest.  I had my new digital camera with me and snapped a few beautiful items in the beading section.
