alan rickman/seminar by theresa rebeck on broadway

Talk about inspiration.

Last weekend my husband was kind enough to take me to Theresa Rebeck's new play: "Seminar" which was simply wonderful.

It was a play about writers and writing:  Four aspiring writers pay an exorbitant amount of money to meet for 10 weeks and take a writing seminar with a highly regarded editor/former writer played by Alan Rickman.  I mean you can't get any better than that, really.

The four young writers got more than they payed for - Rickman's character ruthlessly tells them the truth - about themselves and their writing.  I especially liked how characteristics of the aspiring writers (elements of their personality that Leonard cut them down about) actually mirrored some of his own personal failings: the name dropping/self aggrandizing stance on writing; the fear of letting go of the past; the rampant sexuality; the truly talented writer that keeps his work hidden out of fear.  I have to admit, the writer in me also keyed into the writers' habits of overwriting a particular piece/not letting anyone seeing a particular work.  Bad habits that I seem to fall into every now and again myself.

I am just tickled that I was finally able to see Rickman live on stage.

I've been a fan of Alan Rickman's since his portrayal of Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility

He also was in one of my other favorite films: Dogma

And of course he played Severus Snape in my much loved Harry Potter movies:

Here is a recent interview he did where he speaks about acting and the various roles he's played through the years:

song for the evening

I just heard about the passing of Etta James.  What a beautiful, soulful singer.

creative yearly goals

Well, here we go again, another year.  2012.

I know I haven't blogged that much lately - to be honest I have been swamped with crafting projects for other people and was hit one after the other with requests.  I still haven't posted all of them.  I'll try to do that bit by bit as I have time.

My hope this year is to really try to find more time for myself and my own personal creative pursuits.  I have found, that as many mothers before me, I've easily fallen into the "all baby all the time" routine.  And then, where is the time for me, right?

I look at my own personal art journal, my guitar, my sheet music/vocal warm up tapes gathering dust and it does make me a bit sad.  So this year I'm going to try my hardest to really get some "me time."

To start off everything I've re-vamped the blog a bit.  A nice new look to start off a nice new year.

"All I know is that I have to act. It's a compulsion. I'm driven to it. I wouldn't say that I would die if it were taken away from me, but a large part of me would shrivel up."

"Writing is the strength of any project. If the script isn't good, then you'll be doing a cellophane job from day one, patching it up, trying to cover all the holes."
