make a wish - geekcrafting for samantha - hermione granger's beaded bag (part 1)

Since I've learned that Samantha is a fan of Hermione Granger, I decided to try making Hermione's beaded bag mentioned in the books and seen in the films.

I've gathered my supplies. (see below)

I am making my own version of the one used in the movies -   it won't be an exact a screen replica -  but I'll try my best.

I opted for a satins and velvets in varying shades of purple.

I chose embroidery thread in a light blue and peach.

The beads are glass and iridescent, having purple, black and blue in them, depending on how the light shines on them.  Also I chose some brown and black beads as well.

I could not find a gray sort of cording for the drawstring, so I went for more of a blue to match the embroidery on the bag.

My first task was to determine how to construct such a bag.

Online I've found various patterns for small jewelry pouches.

Here are a few I've been looking at:

I decided to kind of use these and just make the bag much bigger.
I want Samantha to at least be able to bring it to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (her big wish being granted) and be able to at least put her wallet inside!

After a lot of trial and error, I was able to come up with a pattern big enough to my liking.

So far I portioned off the bag into 8 sections and cut my fabric.  Using what fusible stabilizer I had on hand at home, I added that to by pieces and sewed the outside of the bag together.

Right now, I'm at the point where I'm hand embroidering the outside of the bag.

Then my plan is to do the beading, then construct the inside of the bag.  The bottom/ tassel of the bag will come last.

More updates as I progress with the project!
